The Conclusion to the BEST MMORPG Series
We have a few more questions to answer before this set of articles is complete.
Which game did you look forward to?
I really looked forward to Shadowbane. I researched everything I could about the game. In fact, I was so pumped up about
it that I thought about making a fan-site for the game months before release. Unfortunately, the bugs that plagued the
game at launch convinced me to ignore this game. Many will say, "But, ALL games have a horrible launch." Why? Why should
paying customers have to deal with piss-poor service? I think many developers don't worry about a bad launch like they should
simply because the target audience is usually too young to care. I'm sure most of us will have the patience for small problems,
but not being able to play the game at all is NOT a small problem. This is what Open Beta testing is for, right? As the online
gamer population gets more mature, things like this won't be ignored so easily.
Has anyone really been able to create a game as good as the first year of Ultima Online?
Ultima Online had it's share of problems, but there were certain aspects of this game that were perfect:
- Open Player Versus Player Environment
- Skill Based vs Level Based
- Easily Replaced Items
- Full Looting System
- Incredible Crafting System
- Player Housing
- Interesting Storyline
- and much more..
The current version of UO has nothing to do with what was one of the best MMORPGs ever. In fact, I wouldn't advise my
worst enemy to play the current game.
Many of today's games lack one or more of these qualities. I personally don't think ANY games have truly given the player
a means to influence the world around them. Shadowbane seems to have started down the right path, but somehow couldn't pull
it together.
Now that World of Warcraft is the hottest selling MMORPG in the world, Blizzard has the responsibility of leading the online
gaming genre to a new level. Blizzard appears to be a developer that cares about it's customer. Hopefully the forum moderators
and in-game Game Masters won't ruin this image for them.
I hope I will live to see the day that the Horde vs Alliance "war" actually means something. When you are at war, you don't
schedule times to play a friendly game of capture the flag...
By the way, I truly believe Blizzard will eventually nerf stealth classes (especially rogue) so less people will play them. Why? Well there are a lot of people
who complain about being ganked(on a pvp server...). Hopefully, my intuition is wrong this time...
Until next time, keep killing, keep grinding, and take a break every now and then.
Am I the only one excited about Lineage 3? (Unreal 3 Engine!)
