Yah, sounds like the most idiotic thing ever right? Unfortunately this is absolutely real. Last Thursday, President Bush signed into law a prohibition on posting annoying Web messages or sending annoying e-mail messages without disclosing your true identity.
“Whoever…utilizes any device or software that can be used to originate telecommunications or other types of communications that are transmitted, in whole or in part, by the Internet… without disclosing his identity and with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten, or harass any person…who receives the communications…shall be fined under title 18 or imprisoned not more than two years, or both.”

And I thought Game Masters with too much authority place players in an unrealistic environment…
So what does this mean for the online player killer? Well hopefully this law will be overturned by the supreme court. But, since most of the patriotic act (also known as stealing all your freedom for the sake of “national security”) is still in place, I wouldn’t hold my breath. Either way, the next time you kill a “carebear” in your favorite MMORPG, you may spend 2 years in jail..lol.
I guess I’ll be careful what I say about this new law. I don’t want the FBI to arrest(kidnap) me and imprison(torture then kill) me in a undisclosed federal holding facility. Although it would be great for traffic if I could make it back home and write about the experience online, I don’t think I will take the chance… |
